Selective Laser Sintering: functionality, strength and versatility

The polymers printed using SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) technology are a Nylon-based plastic material for 3D printing. They are perfect for prototypes, automatic machine parts, or special mechanical engineering components.

What is Selective Laser Sintering?

SLS technology uses a laser to harden and bind small grains of nylon and elastomeric materials into layers, which then combine to form a three-dimensional structure.

The laser traces the model of each cross-section of the 3D design, starting from a powder base. As the layers of the project are built, the base on which the powders rest is lowered until all the layers are formed and the final product is completed.

Benefits of SLS

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology relies on laser fusion of high-performance thermoplastic materials. The construction process does not require support structures, allowing for maximum design freedom. This, combined with a wide range of loaded and unloaded materials, enables the creation of geometries with undercuts, hollow holes, and conformal ducts.

It allows for the printing of large parts with good surface finish, and offers the possibility of further finishing to improve the aesthetic, tactile, and functional properties of the component.

Moreover, 3D printing with SLS enables the creation of components in a single solution, which would otherwise require the production and subsequent assembly of multiple parts.

This results in:

  • Reduced production costs
  • Optimized testing processes
  • Reduced material waste
  • Faster execution and production speed

SLS materials are used to create sturdy and durable parts for a wide variety of applications.

Ideal laser sintering applications

  • Small component series as a cost-effective alternative to injection molding
  • Functional parts and prototypes
  • Lightweight components with complex lattice structures
  • Prototypes with mechanical properties that can be used directly in production environments
  • Customized production of unique, complex, or limited-run components

Why should you choose laser sintering?

SLS technology is perfect for moving parts, interdependent components, and hinges, as it does not require support structures. It allows the creation of highly intricate geometries quickly and cost-effectively, with a variety of finishes such as smoothing, painting, surface treatments, machining, chrome plating, and the integration of threaded inserts.

The design freedom offered by SLS makes it the ideal solution for both prototype production and series of complex parts intended for final use.
