Selective Laser Sintering: functionality, strength and versatility

SLS laser sintering technology printed polymer is a Nylon-based plastic material for 3D printing. Ideal for prototypes, automatic machine parts or special mechanical engineering pieces.

What is Selective Laser Sintering?

SLS technology employs a laser to harden and bind small grains of nylon and elastomeric materials into layers which are combined into a three-dimensional structure. The laser draws the model of each of the cross sections of the 3D design starting from a powder base. As the layers of the project are built, the base on which the powders rest is lowered until all the layers are built and the final product is complete.

Benefits of SLS

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology is based on laser melting of high-performance thermoplastics. The fabrication process does not require support structures and consequently allows for maximum design freedom, which – combined with a wide range of loaded and not loaded materials – enables the creation of geometries featuring undercuts, through-hole, and conformal ducts. It allows large parts to be printed with both good surface finish and the opportunity to perform additional finishing to improve the aesthetic, tactile and functional appearance of the part. Also, 3D printing in SLS allows parts to be created in a single solution which would otherwise have required the production and subsequent assembly of several different parts. This results in:

  • reduced production costs
  • testing process optimization
  • waste material reduction
  • execution and production speed

SLS materials are used to create sturdy and durable parts for a wide variety of applications.

Ideal laser sintering applications

  • small component series as a cheaper alternative to injection molding
  • functional parts and prototypes
  • lightweight components with complex space frame structures
  • prototypes possessing mechanical properties and which can be used immediately in production areas
  • customized production of unique, complex or limited-run components

Why should you choose laser sintering?

SLS technology is a perfect choice for moving, interdependent parts and hinges because it does not require any supporting structure. It allows highly intricate geometries to be produced quickly and cost-efficiently, with a variety of finishes such as smoothing, painting, surface treatments, machining, chrome plating, and incorporation of threaded inserts. SLS’s freedom of design is the ideal solution for both prototype production and for series of complex parts intended for the final use. Controllo Qualità srl guides you from the design to the delivery of the final part and also during the production of functional prototypes.
